In a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, by Advocate Vaishali Hegde, the High Court has decided to take suo-moto cognizance of the matter concerning the burning of the shanties of migrant workers in Bengaluru.
The letter cites the reports that were covered by various newspapers related to the unfortunate incident wherein the poor migrant workers hailing from Kalaburagi and who had been living in Kachrakanahalli area, near the Sunday Bazar area in Eastern part of Bengaluru, were rendered homeless and dispossessed of their belongings by some mischievous persons causing trouble to the poor workers. The workers though were not present in their homes when this incident happened as they had gone back to their villages before the lockdown.
It was urged before the High Court through the letter that the guilty must be brought before the Court and that no one should go unpunished wherein they are responsible for creating havoc of such an extent and that the hardships of the poor and homeless must be taken into account and that their needs must be taken care of by the authorities and they should be provided with requisite facilities at this point.
The letter also prayed before the High Court that suo-moto public interest litigation must be taken by the Karnataka High Court and that through the appropriate authorities, an investigation must take place so that those who are behind such a horrible incident be brought before the Court.
Under the directions of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice S Vishwajith Shetty, the Registrar General was directed that suo-moto public interest litigation must be filed and to make the State of Karnataka and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike as the respondent party to the case. The case is now scheduled to be heard on the 11th of June by the High Court.
