A bench of the National Green Tribunal's Southern wing has registered a case with regard to the killing of a pregnant elephant that was killed in Kerala. Taking suo moto cognizance of the issue that sparked anger all over the country, National Green Tribunal has registered a case in this regard on the basis of a news article.
This incident took place at the Silent Valley, which is in the Palakkad District of Kerala, where apparently the innocent elephant became the victim to an act of human savagery and was fed a pineapple filled with firecrackers, which when was consumed by the animal caused an explosion in the mouth of the elephant, and completely shattered the jaw of the poor animal. Upon autopsy, it was discovered that the elephant was pregnant and the fetus also died along with the mother elephant.
The bench which took the cognizance of the matter comprised of Justice K. Ramakrishnan and Justice Saibal Dasgupta. They observed that the lives of animals are put in danger and there is a serious lacuna when it comes to following the norms laid down in the law with regard to the protection o wild animals who are endangered in their natural habitats. Taking the suo moto cognizance the case was registered and the motive stated by them was to avoid such happenings in the future and to formalize a strategy to minimize such acts in the future.
In the pursuit of the above motive, a Joint-Committee has been appointed by the National Green Tribunal which would consist of a Senior Officer, not below the rank of Chief Conservator of Forest, Wildlife; Chief Wildlife Warden, Kerala; a senior officer from Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Southern Zone and few others like these. The main task before the committee would be to submit a report based on facts and also a report giving the details about the actions taken, this would be supplemented by a report consisting of a management plan for the long term within a month.
In the Southern state and the district of Palakkad, the National Green Tribunal has given directions to the various authorities concerned to submit the necessary reports with regard to the investigations, arrests, and recovery with regard to the incident that took place.
The matter is now scheduled to be heard on 10th July 2020.
