The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Thursday, announced a monthly stipend of ?3,000 for lawyers newly enrolled at the Bar.
The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu informed that the stipend would be provided for 2 years to the young lawyers practicing in the State to help them overcome financial difficulties in the initial years if practice.
This has been a longstanding demand of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu, along with that of Puducherry.
"The timely help to the young Advocates will go to long way in ensuring that the standards of Advocates stays high and as a directive result, Tamil Nadu will be able to produce great Advocates and eminent jurists in future.", the Bar Council Chairman PS Amalraj said.
“Several young [law] graduates, mostly with rural or poor background, find it difficult to sustain and as a result, they change the profession for a regular income,” Palaniswami said while announcing the stipend.
As per the council, approximately 2000 young lawyers would reel this benefit every year.
The Chairman of the council thanked CM Palaniswami, on behalf of the entire legal fraternity for this initiative and stated that it would be remembered always by the legal fraternity at large.
The Government of Kerala in 2018 had approved a provision to support young lawyers through a stipend of ?5,000. Availing to lawyers aged less than 30 and having less than 3 years of practice, with an annual income of less than 1 lakh rupees. Recently the Bar Council Of Kerala was criticized by the High Court for the grave delay in the implementation of this order.
The Bar council of India this year had written a letter to the Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers requesting them to support young lawyers, specifically those who are not financially stable, by providing them a minimum sum of ?20,000 per month midst the COVID 19 crisis, taking into consideration the difficulties they might face while facing this deadly Pandemic.
