FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE OF Rs 5000 EACH GRANTED TO 16,448 ADVOCATES TO DEAL WITH COVID CRISIS.
The bar council of Delhi informed the High Court that the financial assistance of Rs 5000 each have been granted to 16448 advocates totaling to Rs 8.22 crores, to deal with the crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The information was given to the division bench of the Delhi high court comprising of Chief justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan, hearing the petition seeking directions to Advocate Welfare Funds Trust to help the advocates facing a financial crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Bar Council of Delhi submitted the status report of the process of providing the financial assistance to advocates, also said that the indigent committee of the council is considering to hold a meeting for finding ways to give assistance to the families of advocates suffering from the virus, for their medical treatment.
They also submitted that the money has been disbursed to the advocates in need from the general funds of the council.
Highlighting the fact that the Government did not provide money for medical insurance and term life insurance of the advocates for the year 2019-2020 for which the allocations in the budget has already been made, it was submitted by the Bar Council that if the insurance would have been provided to the advocates, it would have bought a great relief to the current situation.
They said that there are still more than 62000 advocates who have been deprived of the insurance policies, and for this, the council has decided to take appropriate measures.
They also stated that it is appropriate to collect donations from the advocates who can afford it, so as to prevent the overlapping and the misuse of the money by anyone and to give medical and financial support in the genuine cases.
