The Karnataka High Court has become concerned about the protocols being adopted by the state government for admitting patients who have contracted COVID-19 into hospitals. The Court has sought clarification from the Karnataka state government while dealing with the petitions regarding the deficiency of medical facilities in the state to deal with the surging pandemic.
The Division Bench headed by Chief Justice of Karnataka Abhay S Oka that every citizen has the right to know and be informed about how they could get access to information like vacancy in hospitals if they have tested positive for COVID-19. The Bench queried if there is any protocol available which common men can follow to get immediate access to COVID-19 treatment.
The AAG Chinnappa submitted that a person can call the helpline on 108. He also mentioned that even the private hospitals have managed to set up wards with 19000 beds available. Along with that there are 4 dedicated COVID hospitals and 16 other such health centers across Bengaluru to treat COVID-19 patients. Further the Bench remarked that “Time taken for tests are very crucial.”Bruhat Bengalurur Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has reasoned with this by informing the court that the patient was contacted within 12-14 hours after they have received any crucial information. The Court has directed the Government to make available a rational and transparent system which includes real time data for availability of beds.
The Court has expressed its concerned regarding if there is any concrete scientific data suggesting the transmission of the virus from a dead person’s body to another. With regard to this, the court opined that “fear psychosis is the main reason why people are ill-treating the dead bodies of persons who have succumbed to the virus and not giving them the deserved respect and dignity.
No order was passed due to paucity of time but the matter has been posted for next hearing on the 13thof July.
