The Division Bench at the Karnataka High Court of comprising of the Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Aravind Kumar were dealing with a whole batch of pleas concerning various issues around the COVID-19 pandemic.
The High of Karnataka has directed the state government to continue to provide food and other ration benefits notwithstanding them being a holder or ration card amidst the economic chaos due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Court asked the Additional Solicitor General M B Nargund to send a photocopy of the notification/order isuued by the government which has provided for the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojna Scheme to those not having ration cards.
Other issues like the food security of persons in containment zones were also dealt with when it was brought up by Advocate Clifton D’Rozario. The Court was informend that the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) has listed 900 families in containment zones with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Pertaining to this issue, the court directed BBMP address the needs and grievances of such families.
The Bench further dealt with the issue of mid-day meal scheme which was cancelled in lieu of the pandemic. The Pregnant, lactating women and minor children are facing a lack of nutritious food. The court has directed the state government to ensure replace it with a better system and supply food to the anganawadi beneficiaries.
The next issue which was pointed out was the lack of availability of protective gear and safety standards against COVID-19 to the Pourakarmikas (Sanitation Workers) due to which 23 of them have tested positive for COVID-19. The Court has asked the State Government to providedetailed information regarding the measures taken for their safety and protection.
The matter was posted for hearing on the 13thof July 2020.
