Are we moving forward or back to the primitive age? Every day we, women and men, live with fear of being harmed or robbed or raped. Turn on the TV and yet another sad case of rape and then starts the debate to which there is no conclusion but instead out there is another case arising and not many willing to fight the case because of the threats.
All it takes is a brave soul to win the fight. One such lawyer, Deepika Singh Rajawat, represented the 8yr old girl’s family, who was from the Bakarwal – Gujjar community who was abducted, raped and murdered in Rassana village in Hirangar tehsil of Kathua district in January.
Rajawat stepped up to help the family and wasn’t just committed and forthright to the case but was also valour in spite of the treats she received from the rightwing political parties. She even expressed her fears stating “I don’t know till when I will be alive. I can be harmed. I was also threatened that ‘We will not forgive you.’ I am going to tell SC that I am in danger.”
The father of the victim further expressed his fears to the SC and allowing his plea, SC transferred the trial to District and session court, Pathankot, Punjab.
The Indian Merchants Chamber of Commerce and Industry ladies Wing has awarded Rajawat the ‘Woman of the Year ‘ for her bravery and will be hosting a ceremony to honor her in Mumbai on 11th June.
While speaking to the LiveLaw, Ms. Rajawat stated that “Even though I am grateful to the organizer and supporters, the fight will still continue for all children, irrespective of the caste or color. The award is surely a motivator but my real award will be when the country is abuse – free. “
