The Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) is under strict scrutiny from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) as allegations have surfaced that its members placed candidates in the sports quota priority list for gaining admission in medical colleges. The inquiry was launched on the basis of complaints of irregularities in the allotment of seats by roller in-line hockey players Bharathchandra Reddy and Varshita Raj. Reddy’s father lodged a complaint on May 25, 2018, against G Venkataramana, the deputy director of SATS, stating that he took bribe worth Rs. 1 lakh in August 2017 to issue a copy of allotment of priorities to sportspersons for admission in MBBS/BDS course under sports quota. He put forth a witness as well as several recorded conversations about the bribe to support his claim. The ACB currently suspects that parents might have given Rs. 20 to 40 lakhs to officials for getting their children enrolled into medical colleges in the State under the sports quota. Further, the ACB has observed that most students who enrol in medical colleges under sports quota state that they play sports such as roller in-line hockey, fencing, judo, archery, handball and parasailing, but do not actually play for the college.
