As this monsoon season took a toll over the north eastern states of India specifically Assam, a severe flood alert has been indicated over Paltan Bazzar, Brahmaputra.
As a second wave of flooding occurred in Assam affecting more than 16000 people since the third week of June a death toll over 34 has been recorded. As per Assam State Disaster Management (ASDMA) nearly 20,000 people have taken shelter in 270 relief camps. This precarious situation in Assam has alerted many departments to take appropriate actions promptly.
One of such being, in a video conference held with Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the union minister of Jal Shakti- Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that “The first installment under Flood Management Programme (FMP) of Rs.346Cr will be released to state shortly”
The main acting authority for Assam floods has been ASDMA. It is an authority under Disaster Management Act, 2005. The authority’s main focus is on disaster management, awareness, establishment of safer hospitals and schools, preparation of disaster management plans, etc. as ASDMA has come up with disaster management plans under which the scope of this plan is stated as:
The authority in its policy has briefly explained the possible ways of areas affecting and allocated the responsibilities accordingly to sub authorities.
The state government has formulated The Assam State Action Plan on Climate Change (2015-2020) which monitors climatic changes which might play a role in this current ongoing floods situation The floods has affected major life species including Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary where even wild life is in danger which brings many authorities into picture as wildlife sanctuaries are in danger of being vanished.
