SC Dismisses Plea against Conducting CLAT 2020 via Online Mode
The Supreme Court on July 29, 2020, dismissed the petition that challenged the conduct of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) via online mode. The bench was headed by JUSTICE L. NAGESHWARA RAO who heard the matter and refused to hear the plea filed by Advocate Mitul Jain.
Advocate Mitul Jain contended that the CLAT committee had previously decided to hold the exam offline. But on June 30, 2020, the committee decided to hold a computer-based online exam. The petitioner pointed out that this move will prevent aspiring students who do not have access to computers as there are no specified centers.
The Executive Committee of Consortium of National Law Universities stated that the examination would be held online as the offline test would require large scale movement of students to limited centers and transportation in the handling of question papers and answer scripts which is not possible in the current COVID 19 situation as the number of cases is surging. Online tests at home cannot ensure transparency, integrity, and fairness of such national level examination. For the best interest of the health and safety of candidates and test administrators, an online test at a large number of centers with proper measures is conducted.
The CLAT is a national level entrance exam for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law programs. It is offered by 22 National Law Universities around the country and it is organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities consisting of representative universities. The CLAT examination is to be held on August 22, 2020, and the last date for registration of the same was on July 10, 2020.
Sudhir Krishnaswamy who is the Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University, Bangalore on his live YouTube session addressed different concerns and queries regarding CLAT 2020. He disclosed that as of now 200 centers have been finalized. He assured that the health and safety protocols will be of ‘Highest Standard’ at the test centers. Candidates who are asymptomatic will sit in the ‘general testing room’ to maintain physical distance and other health and safety norms. Candidates who are symptomatic will be placed in and ‘isolation room’ in the same center.
