The Supreme Court has condemned the isolation of leprosy patients and directed the society to treat them on an equal pedestal. The SC order came on a PIL by “Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy” which sought quashing of 119 archaic central and state laws which not only sanctioned isolation but permitted dissolution on marriage on the ground of leprosy.
PIL petitioner Raju Ramachandran argued these provisions unfairly discriminate against persons affected by leprosy by denying them equal treatment of personal laws.
The Supreme Court held that” There has to be social awareness to the factum that with the advancement of science in the past forty years, the disease is curable.” The Bench then passed the following directions:
It also asked the Centre and states to submit action plans for the repeal of 119 archaic laws concerning such disability.
