A news article in the Dainik Bhaskar Gaya edition was published regarding pollution caused to the historical river ‘Sarovar’, where devotees were reported to buy some feed from outside the Mahabodhi temple and offer it to the fishes of the Sarovar but often throwing the polythene bags in which the feed are supplied along with the feed into the Sarovar which is definitely affecting the fauna and flora of the Sarovar and also the entire ecosystem of the temple.
A suo moto writ petition was filed regarding the same. A division bench of Justice Ravi Ranjan and Justice S Kumar at the Patna High Court observed, “Some bold, effective decisions should be taken by the State of Bihar and make our State ‘Plastic Free Zone’”, while hearing the suo moto writ petition.
The District Magistrate-cum-Chairman, Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee, on the other hand submitted before the court that remedial measures are being taken for preventing the hazard caused by plastics bags in the temple premises itself. Penal provisions are also being carved out, while strict vigil is one of the other steps which is being taken.
‘We are further unable to understand as to why plastic/polythene even above the thickness of 50 microns should be allowed?’, questioned the bench.
