It’s the first time in history that Three Woman Judges will be sitting in the Supreme Court at the same time. It is happening for the first time in 68 years with a total of 233 Judges.
The legal profession has usually been associated with only men and the first woman to enter the legal field was Cornelia Sorabjee who became the first Female Barrister in India. However she got recognition as a Barrister only in the year 1923 despite the fact that she cleared her pleaders exam in 1899 from the Allahabad High Court. The first female Additional Solicitor General was Ms. Indira Jaising who was appointed in the year 2009.
The Bar and the Bench are aware of the fact that there is gender disparity which exists in the institution. The apex court got its first woman Judge Justice Fathima Beevi in 1989 which took almost four decades to take place.
This issue is not only persistent in India but also in developed countries like UK and Ireland and some other international bodies following the same trend. However, the fact that three woman Judges will be sitting in the Supreme Court for the first time is a hope for all the female aspirants who want to become a Judge in the future.
