The only thing that can be done to prevent violent mobs from taking the streets is to publicly commend the act as well as to bring the violators to justice, Attorney General K.K. Venugopal claimed. The AG stressed upon the inaction of the police to take action against hooligans who threaten not only Public Property, but also endanger the lives of the common people by their illicit acts, often fuelled by irrational hatred. Calling upon the recent matter of the Padmavat agitation and Marathas strike, the AG berated the Police Department for not punishing the persons involved. This, in turn, indirectly gave people the message that they can assemble a mob to demand anything and everything under the faux of public protest and not fear about Police intervention.
Adding to the list of mob related violence, the most recent example is the one which occurred during the Kanwariya Yathra, where a group of Kanwariyas publicly vandalized a vehicle in the middle of the street. They later went on to allegedly destroy a Police Vehicle.
A PIL was filed by Kodungallur Film Society who implored the usage of Judicial sanctioned force in order to curb violent protests. The PIL proposed that the guidelines devised by the Court in the case of In Re Destruction of Public and Private Properties v Govt of AP be strictly followed by Centre and State Government. The appearing advocate added that the detrimental media coverage which is spurned out of such incidents corrodes the Country’s international image.
The Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justices D.Y. Chandrachund, A.M. Khanwilker and Chief Justice Dipak Misra were in accordance with the demands.
