The Government Order (GO) issued by the State of Tamil Nadu on 4th January has been recalled. This GO had allowed multiplexes and film theatres to function at full capacity from 13th January. This notification comes in light of the order issued by the Madras High Court on Friday, 8th January. In this order, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, comprising of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice S Ananthi, issued a stay on the implementation of the GO issued by the State Government on the 4th of January. They had opined that until they heard the petition challenging the GO on Monday, 11th January, the Government cannot allow the multiplexes and film theatres to function at above the currently allowed half capacity.
The Court also requested the State Government to reconsider their decision, to permit the multiplexes and film theatres to function at full capacity, before the next hearing. They advised the State Government to just increase the number of screenings rather than increase the number of people attending the screenings. This, however, was not the only PIL filed addressing this matter. Numerous other people, including advocates, had approached the court regarding this issue.
Further, The Central Government, on 5th January, had intimated the Chief Secretary of the State Government, that any guidelines issued by the State Government should be in strict adherence to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs states that all movie theatres, situated outside containment zones, can only function at a maximum of half capacity. The State Government in its latest Government Order has allowed multiplexes and film theatres to function only at half capacity. But the State Government has accepted the suggestion made by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to allow the multiplexes and film theatres to screen more film shows.
