This Independence Day saw the Chief Justice, Dipak Misra address on several important issues during the function at Supreme Court. What has caught the attention was the indirect reference that he made to numerous issues posing a crisis within the judiciary. He passionately mentioned that while criticising a system, pointing out its drawbacks are fairly simple, what is more challenging is to transform the system into a performing one. This typically requires one to think beyond his personal ambitions or grudges and take constructive steps with a positive mindset.
While he didn’t particularly point at any one or identify the same he said, '…there may be some elements who may to weaken the institution'. There had been a previous claim by four senior most judges that the country’s democracy is at stake. They pointed fingers at the incompetence shown at handling the administration in the Supreme Court. The judges portrayed their concern on the assigning of “sensitive cases to junior judges”. This happened in November, 2017 following which in April 2018, more than 60 members of the Rajya Sabha, hailing from varied political backgrounds and parties signed the petition to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. The motion was though rejected by the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Mr Venkaiah Naidu citing the insufficiency of the grounds required to proceed with the impeachment.
