The second part of material collection drive organised by Supreme Court advocates in response to the flood breaking out in Kerela is currently ongoing opposite to the apex court. The collection started at 5pm yesterday and will continue until 11 pm . It was graced by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rajendra Menon. The initiative also witnessed the Supreme Court Bar Association President and Senior Advocate Vikas Singh and Sneior Counsel V. Giri.
The articles collected were toiletries, beddings, mosquito nets, chlorine, gloves, toys, face masks etc. The idea is to accumulate 50 tonnes of physical goods for the relief drive. The first round that was organised on August 18 saw the collection of articles like dal, rusk, maida etc. The navy has assigned a special aircraft to deliver the goods. This week, the beginning of it saw the Supreme Court judges deciding to donate 25,000 rupees each as part of the relief mechanism. Infact, KK Venugopal has made a contribution of Rs 1 crore himself. It is not unknown as to the crisis that has broken out in Kerela. In the flood that took several lives, 35 dams were left open and 44 rivers are overflowing. The torrential rains took the most of it and more than 3 Lac homes are destroyed. The relief activities are being organised by National Disaster Response Force.
