A breakthrough decision by the Cabinet to amend the Hindu Marriage Law has been commended by the majority as progressive.
The amendment in question redacts a cause for divorce that was previously reasonable according to the Constitution. Prior to the yet to be enforced amendment, if one of the partners in the marriage was diagnosed with leprosy, the other could file for divorce, and the divorce would be granted to them. According to many, this was a regressive law that marginalized an already suffering class of people. It is a sad shock to come to terms with the fact that only now this Orthodox law is being amended, but all's well that ends well. The ignorance of the populace regarding medical conditions had led to the sustenance of such a law till now. Diseased people have languished their expulsion from the society as the illiterate and ignorant, which constitute a major part of our population even today, considered them to be cursed. Despite there existing a cure for leprosy, such stigma still exists. The Personal laws (amendment) bill seeks to erase such stigmas.
Appreciation has flowed in, even from overseas, as distinguished members from the Leprosy Mission England and Wales accredited the campaigners who had strived for this amendment.
