THE UTTARAKHAND OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ACT, 2009

PREAMBLE
An Act to provide for adoption of Hindi as the language to be used for the official purposes and other matters of the State of Uttarakhand
Whereas, Article 345 and clause (3) of Article 348 of the Constitution provided inter alia that the Legislature of a State may by law adopt Hindi in Devanagri script as the language to be used for official purposes of the State and for matters hereinafter appearing:
Be it enacted by State Assembly in the Sixtieth Year of the Republic of India as follows--
Section 1 - Short title, extent and commencement
(1) This Act may be called the Uttarakhand Official Language Act, 2009.
(2) It extends to the whole of Uttarakhand.
(3) It shall come into force at once.
Section 2 - Hindi to be Official Language of the State
Without prejudice to the provisions of Articles 346 and 347 of the Constitution, Hindi in Devanagri script shall be the language used in respect of the following:--
(a) (1) Ordinances promulgated under Article 213 of the Constitution;
(2) Orders, notifications, rules, regulations and by laws issued by the State Government under the Constitution of India or under any law made by Parliament or the Legislature of the State; and
(b) all or any of the official purposes of the State:
Provided that the State Government may by general or special order in this behalf permit the use of International form of Indian numerals for any official purpose of the State.
Section 3 - Use of Sanskrit
In the interest of Sanskrit speaking people, Sanskrit language shall be used as second official language for such purposes as may be notified by the State Government from time to time.
Section 4 - Repeal and saving
(1) The Uttar Pradesh Official Language Act, 1951 is hereby repealed in relation to Uttarakhand.
(2) Notwithstanding such repeal specified in sub-section (1), anything done or any action taken under this Act shall be deemed to have been done or taken under this Act, as if tins Act were in force at all material times.
