Sanjeev Punalekar, an advocate with the right wing group Sanatan Sanstha, was arrested for the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. Punalekar was arrested along with his associate Vikram Bhave ,by the CBI, both of whom are associated with the group Sanatan Sanstha. The Sanstha, released press statements protesting the arrests and has called it a conspiracy on behalf of the CBI and bowing to the demands of the progressives.
The said crime took place in 2013, when Narendra Dabholkar was gunned down by two bike-borne assassins outside his Pune residence, while he was on his morning walk. The accused were said to have been connected to the shooter Sharad Kalaskar, one of the shooters associated in the case. The other suspect in the case was Sachin Paraksrao Andure, who along with Kalaskar revealed during the questioning that the killing was orchestrated by the right wing group. Further, a common link between the murder of Dabholkar and the subsequent deaths of other journalists and ationalists Gauri Lankesh, Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi was also discovered by the CBI. This case is being looked after by the Bombay High Court.
