The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of four judges to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Within two weeks of this, the Centre confirmed the appointment of Justices B R Gavai, Surya Kant, Aniruddha Bose and A S Bopanna as judges of the Supreme Court. This will give the Court the sanctioned number of 31 judges. On 8th of May, the Collegium recommended elevation of Justice Gavai from Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench) and Surya Kant, who is the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. With the appointment of Justice Gavai, the Apex Court got a judge from the Scheduled Caste community after nine years. Justice Gavai was previously heard in the controversial case of the death of Justice B H Loya., where he had denied the existence of any foul play.
Justice Surya Kant,from thePunjab and Haryana High Court, isat Sl.No.2 in the combined seniority list of HC judges, and was appointed CJ of Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. In addition to this, the Collegium, reiterated the proposals for elevation of Justice Aniruddha Bose the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, and Justice A S Bopanna the Chief Justice of Guahati High Court. Justice Bose originally hails from the Calcutta High Court and is at number 12 in all-India seniority of judges, whereas Justice Bopanna, is at number 36, and comes from the Karnataka High Court.
