The appointment of Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai to the Supreme Court, was nothing short of a landmark event. The Apex Court got a judge from the Dalit community after nine years. The previous judge from the Dalit community was Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, who retired in 2010. Since that day, there was no one from the Scheduled Caste community.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of Justice Gavai from Bombay High Court, along with Justice Surya Kant, the Chief Justice of High Court of Himachal Pradesh to the Apex Court. The recommendation was approved by the President and the official notification was made on the 22nd of May. Justice Gavai had been in the news after he released statements regarding the suspicious death od Justice Loya.
The appointment of Justice Gavai was important in numerous contexts, the primary being that it was almost after a decade that, a judge from the Dalit community was being appointed to the Apex Court bench.
