The Bombay High Court has granted interim bail to Varavara Rao on medical grounds. Rao was arrested for his connection with the 2016 case of the Surajgarh iron ore mine. Yesterday, Rao was granted bail for 6 months on a bail bond of Rs. 50,000. The bail order was passed by the principal bench of the High Court. The advocates Firdos Mirza and Nihalsingh Rathod appearing on behalf of Rao have approached the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
80 vehicles were in service for transporting the iron ore from Surajgarh mines in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Maoists lit fires on these vehicles. It was alleged that Rao had links with this incident and so, he was arrested, and was then booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention ) Act.
Along with Rao, other activists were also arrested and charged with offenses under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The other activists and academician had made a provoking statements in their speech for which they were alleged under UAPA. Dr. Varavara Rao was suffering from various ailments and so, he was admitted at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital. On seeing the worsening condition of Rao, the Nagpur Bench granted him bail on February 23, 2021. The NIA has mentioned that Rao was in good condition when he was sent back to Taloja Jail. Rao was already charged with the offense in the Bhima Koregaon case and so, he was arrested in August 2018. When the enquiry was going in the Pune case, he was alleged for the incident at Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.
Besides the two cases, Rao’s trial in Karnataka is still incomplete. In the three cases, he was given bail. The lawyers appearing for Rao, have already said that they are preparing for sureties and the bail bond. The information of the order from the Nagpur bench is still yet to come.
