The producers of the Movie Padmavat have moved the Supreme Court after 6 states have banned their film. A bench consisting of the Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice D Y Chandrachud has agreed to hear the plea as the movie was set for schedule release on January 25. The SC noted that banning of the film throughout the state without any law and order problem is unjustified especially when film had already undergone change of title from Padmavati to Padmavat. The SC had earlier dismissed the petition of Manohar Lal Sharma for stay on release in UK pointing out that outsiders cannot pass prejudicial comments on the film pending the approval of CBFC.
There has been much controversy surrounding the release of the movie Padmavati in view of the protests from the Shri Karni sena, an organisation of the Rajput community and other groups in various states regarding its storyline depicting Padmavati dancing without a veil. On November 19, the Viacom18 motion pictures, the studio of the Padmavati film deferred the December 1 release of the film indefinitely. The Karni sena had damaged the sets of the film in Jaipur’s Jaigarh fort and assaulted Mr Bhansali and other groups like Jai Rajputana Singh have also joined the protests.
Although the film makers have clarified that there is no intimate dream sequence between Rani Padmini and Allaudin Khilji as alleged by the members of Karni Sena, protests continued with the same intensity and the Rajasthan,MP, Gujarat,Punjab and UP banned the movie even pending its certification form the CBFC.
The Allahabad HC had earlier issued a contempt notice to the CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi in light of a petition seeking the ban of the film for its promotion of the practice of sati – or the practice of self-immolation by widows after death of husband. Apart from the previously mentioned states, the health ministry of Haryana also tweeted the ban of the film.
