A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice DipakMisra agreed to hear a plea that seeks a stay on the controversial Rafale deal between India and France. Advocate ML Sharma had moved a plea asking for an immediate hearing before the bench that also comprised Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud. He cited that there were major discrepancies in the deal.
The petition said that the international government agreement to buy 36 Rafalefighter jets must be scrapped and quashed as it was in consonance with high handed corruption and that too not ratified by the parliament under article 253 of the Constitution. It also sought the prosecution of prime minister Narendra Modi, who was the former defence minister and also Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar, business tycoon Anil Ambani and French Armament firm Dassault for recovering the amount.
Rafale deal is basically a defence agreement signed between India and France by purchase of 36 fighter aircraft in a fly away condition for upgrading Indian Air Force equipment. The Rafale Fighter is a twin engine Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft manufactured by the French Aerospace company Dassault Aviation. The ender was floated in 2007.
