Certain citizens moved to the Supreme Court against arbitrary arrests of human rights defenders citing “Maoist Links”. The Maharashtra police raided the homes of activists in several states and arrested at least five of them, which led to protests from human rights defenders.
A Telugu poet from Hyderabad, activists from Mumbai, trade union activists from Faridabad and civil liberties activist from New Delhi were arrested. The plea of civil liberties activist is yet to be heard today. The trade union activist was ordered to be kept at home until police obtains transit remand for her.
On behalf of the petitioners, the counsel submitted that the arrests were made without any evidence and that an emergency situation existed in the country. They alleged that the arrest was made to compress the voice of disagreement.
It was prayed in the petition to issue appropriate direction, by directing an independent investigation into the arrest of human right activists with respect to the Bhima-Koregaon violence. The petitioners further sought an explanation from the Maharashtra Government over this issue.
The Petition stated that the use of Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act against the activities which have no history of involving in any violence is in bad faith and thus an attempt to compress the voices. The raids were carried out as a part of investigation, which resulted in violence in the Koregaon-Bhima village.
