The Supreme Court, while continuing its hearing on the Delhi’s garbage issue which has been worsening since a long time expressed its concern regarding the feasibility of the formation of too “high-level” committee. The Court said that it would not be plausible for people to gather everyday for the meeting, since the committee comprised of very top level persons. It would be difficult for all the members to gather in the meeting due to the busy schedule of the top level persons.
The committee as directed by the Supreme Court was asked to implement a policy to clear the dumpsites and for doing this, the Committee was ordered to meet daily for a period of two weeks. But the situation would not be addressed if the people wont attend the meetings regularly.
The Lt. Governor has been asked to inform the court if any changes are intended to make in the list, which is yet to be finalized by the panel. The bench also told the Additional Solicitor General that it is a serious problem and the committee should instead comprise of the members from civil society, in order to ensure co-operation from the people of Delhi. It was further highlighted that the landfill sites should be focused on while considering the committee members.
The bench slammed the Delhi civic authorities for having no active action plan regarding the waste management since Delhi has been facing an emergency situation due to the mountains of garbage. The authorities were asked for the details from authorities on project launched in some areas for segregation of household waste.
Besides, highlighting the garbage problem of Delhi and slamming the authorities for inabilities to find the alternative landfill sites, the SC came down hard on the LG after it was informed that no one from Baijal’s office attended the last three meetings.
