The Minister for Women and Child Development (WCD), Ms.Maneka Gandhi has suggested that a child separated from the mother because of she being in prison shall be made to visit her at least three times a week.
An official from the WCD had written to the Home Ministry for incorporating a clause in the prison manual that allows a child to visit the mother thrice a week so that she is in constant touch with her child. In this regard, Ms. Gandhi has stated that a mother who gives birth to her child in prison is allowed to raise her child till five years of age in the prison, however, after five years the child will be separated from the mother. The senior official has said that after a child is taken away from the mother, he or she is sent to a shelter home that is disconnected from the prison due to which the child loses contact with the mother.
Maneka Gandhi has stated that half of the mothers in prison do not know the whereabouts of their children and many such children have been trafficked. She has further added that there shall be a system through which a regular interaction between a child and a mother can be established and this is why the WCD has approached the Home Ministry.
