The Gujarat High Court has held that idol immersion in river Tapithat passes through Surat has been banned by the Gujarat High Court. The court has also directed the authorities to ensure that idol immersion is not only banned for Ganesh Chaturthi but also for other festivals like Durga Puja, Janmashtami, Moharam etc. The Gujarat High Court while passing the order also affirmed the ban order passed by Surat Municipal Corporation. The people appealed to the Corporation to opt for eco friendly idols that can be immersed at homes or mandaps. A petition in this regard was filed by the Surat Citizens Council Trust.
The petition not only wanted the ban on idol immersion in River Tapi but also follow the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board and thereby construct temporary artificial ponds with earthen bunds. It was submitted to the bench that more than 60,000 idols were submitted in River Tapi in 2017 for Ganesh Chaturthi resulting in health problems and water pollution across the city. The Gujarat High Court taking a heed of this has asked to ban this kind of immersion and also follow the Pollution Control Board's orders and regulations in this regard. It mentioned that awareness must be raised to prevent the Pollution of the city through print media and other modes of communication.
