A Journalist and Defense Analyst, Abhijit Iyer Mitra was jailed for his alleged Anti-Odisha Remarks on the social platform, “Twitter”. The remark was considered to have offended the sentiments of Odisha people. The Orissa High Court has granted the bail to him after he has been jailed for over a month, for last 42 days. Iyer-Mitra appeared in the Odisha assembly and tendered an unconditional apology for his comments. Currently, he is admitted to a hospital after he complained of feeling unwell.
Abhijit Iyer-Mitra was first arrested on September 20 in relation to tweets made about Konark temple. He had approached Supreme Court for protection from arrest. The plea was, however, not entertained. He was arrested again on October 24 on account of another tweet about Lord Jagannath.
Special Secretary to Odisha Government informed that the state government has decided not to accord sanction of prosecution in cases where the prosecution has been sought for and also decided to take steps to withdraw other cases pending against Abhijit Iyer Mitra by following laid-down procedures.
Citing that Iyer had earlier appealed to ‘accept his apology and contrition’ in having wounded the sentiments of people of Odisha without intention, the government on Tuesday decided to drop the charges against the defense analyst.
