The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has vehemently opposed the bail plea filed by Christian Michel James before the Patiala House Court in Delhi stating the fact the alleged AgustaWestland deal Middleman has a “history of evasion”. Christian Michel was one of the middlemen who brokered the VVIP helicopter deal which eventually lead to an approximate loss of Rs 2,666 Crores to the National exchequer according to the CBI. On this, the court has reserved its order for December 22.
Michel has contended that he was not required for custodial interrogation and that he has been fully co-operating with the Indian Investigation agencies. Further, he has advanced that since the Indian investigation agencies had joined the Indian investigation agencies the trial proceedings in Italy, they could not try him again as it would lead to a violation of international conventions. He was in CBI custody for 15 days.
However, the CBI opposed the bail application pointing that Michel might flee as he had already tried to escape from Dubai just before his extradition. It was also advanced that Michel, being an influential person having links with people from the ministry and other bureaucrats and politicians, might hamper the proceedings. Further, it was submitted that “International convention is on civil wrongs. This is a criminal trial.”
Following extensive arguments, the Patiala House court bench of special Judge Arvind Kumar has reserved its judgment on the bail plea. The court will now pronounce its order on the bail on Saturday, December 22.
