Uttarakhand government banned screening of the movie Kedarnath citing possible disruption of law and order. This happened after the Uttarakhand High Court refused to order deletion of certain scenes from the said film on Thursday, leaving it to the state authorities to take a decision in the matter.
After the film’s trailer released, several Hindu groups had been demanding that the film be banned as it allegedly promoted “love jihad” and “hurt” Hindu sentiments. Following objections from several Hindu groups and BJP leaders, Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat had formed a committee headed by state Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj to decide whether the movie could be screened in Uttarakhand. The Court was approached by Swami Darshan Bharti alleging that certain presentations in the movie hurt religious sentiments and asked for deletion of the “objectionable scenes”. However, the petition was dismissed after the bench, of Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice R C Khulbe, was informed that the Uttarakhand Government has formed a high-level committee to examine the matter.
Based on the committee’s feedback, “law and order situation too has to be taken into consideration”, the Chief Minister ordered all 13 district magistrates to review and take a call on the matter. Orders have reportedly been passed by the concerned Magistrates of Districts having operational Cinema Halls.
