In a recent development, a prominent social activist named ‘Traffic Ramaswamy’ approached the Apex Court of India seeking CBI probe in the Kodanad estate case. The security guard of the estate was found dead in the Former CM late Jayalalithaa’s retreat home in Nilgiris. The Initial probe found an allegation that two men-C Kanagaraj, who was the driver of Late Jayalalithaa, and KV Sayan drew a sketch for the crime. A total of 10 people were mentioned as accused on the charge sheet filed.
In addition to the above, a journalist from Tehelka released a 16-minute video on January 11. The video suggested the involvement of CM EdapadiPalaniswamy in the break-in and murder case. The journalist also said that the present CM ordered the commission of the crime in the instant case to retrieve certain documents from the Jayalalithaa’s retreat home, and this allegation caught the attention of the journalist when he interviewed the accused involved in the crime.
Mr Ramaswamy demanded CBI probe in this regard and wanted the material evidence gathered in the police investigation to be transferred to the CBI. He said that impartial investigation could not be conducted as the control of the state police lies in the hands of the Chief Minister.
The persisting murders of the security guard and the former Chief Minister’s driver is a politically motivated case and may shed light on the actual cause of the death of the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Since it is apparent that highly influential persons are involved in the crime, the state police could not be trusted with the free and fair investigation in the matter. Therefore, in light of the fundamental rights guaranteed under article 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution, the petition contended that free and fair investigation is imperative.
