Narendra Dabholkar who was a rationalist & Doctor by profession was murdered on 20thAugust 2013 during his morning walk by 2 un-identified bikers. A PIL filed that sought transfer of the case of assassination to CBI was heard by the Bombay High Court on 4th March 2014. The case was subsequently transferred by the Bombay High Court to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Govind Pansare who was a left-wing politician representing Communist Party of India. On 16th February 2015 he and his wife were shot by 2 unidentified bikers. Govind Pansare died on 20th February 2015.
The similarities between both assassinations were that the modus operandi was the same. A PIL was filled in the Bombay HC claiming that Mr Pansare had earlier received several threats and police failed to act on such threats even after knowing of the threats being received by Mr Pansare.
Subsequently when SIT submitted its progress report on Thursday to the Bombay High Court the court raised question on the investigating agencies conducting the probe in both the murders. The divisional bench comprising of Justice SC Dharmadhikari&Justice MS Karnik observed that both - CBI and SIT were relying on the information given by the accused of Gauri Lankesh case who was arrested by the Karnataka police. The court said that the investigating agencies should do their independent probe for both the cases instead of relying on the information given by accused of Gauri Lankesh’s case.
The court also said that Karnataka Police had nabbed the accused in Gauri Lankesh’s case within 6 months however agencies like CBI has not been able to progress in the murder that was done way back in 2015. While praising the work of Karnataka Police the court said that the unfortunate part is that in one state the machinery gets full assistance, while in our state- Maharashtra, either the machinery is not working or not getting cooperation. The courtalso expressed the need of dedicated team with the requisite training and special focus to get hold of the accused in the Pansare and Dabholkar murder cases.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh who appeared on behalf of CBI said soon a charge sheet would be filed in Narendra Dabholkar murder case. The court asked both CBI and SIT to make sincere efforts to arrest the accused in both cases and submit a further progress report in the next hearing on 6thFeburary 2019.
