Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has orally remarked in the Supreme Court that Mayawati who is the head of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) should reimburse the public money which she had spent for installing statues of herself and the party symbol 'elephant' at public places.
CJI has strongly asked the Senior Advocate Rakesh Khanna who is counsel for Mayawati to convey to her the Court’s view where the court said that "Madam Mayawati, reimburse to the exchequer the public money you spent on the elephants. We are of the tentative view that you (Mayawati) should pay the public money from your pocket".
The bench comprised of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna who has posted the final hearing of the case almost after 10 years. The PIL was filed by advocate Ravi Kant where it was alleging that there was a misuse of crores of rupees of public money for installing statues at public places, including a park in Noida. The PIL, which was filed in 2009, sought to restrain Mayawati from installing statues at public places at the cost of the state exchequer and demanded a CBI probe into the issue. Hundreds of crores of public money were spent to "falsely glorify" the Chief Minister which was alleged in the plea.
The plea said that the activity was being carried out under the shade of state policy which is actually violating Article 14 of Constitution and the act was completely arbitrary. Not just the elephant symbols but even the party symbols were being established at a cost of Rs.52.20 crores at public places with the utilisation of the state funds. The petition also sought direction that state government should be directed to remove the statues of Mayawati and her party symbol from public land.
