In a petition filed before the Delhi HC for the protection of Jahanpanah City Forest, New Delhi the HC on 31st May issued notices for response to Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Centre and Delhi Government. The said PIL was filed by Advocate Amit Gupta for protection of City Forest from encroachment and deforestation. The petitioner before the court contends that the forest area spanning 435 acres in South Delhi has been affected by encroachment, garbage dumping and unregulated tree felling.
The petitioner further submits before the court that the continuous loss of tree cover is a matter of serious concern for environment and the green patch may be slowly reduced to a forest only on paper, unless the respondents start taking actions immediately. The plea has also sought for increasing security measures around the forest area to prevent encroachments and illegal felling of trees. Petitioner also pointed out the fact that around 30 security guards were sanctioned for the protection of the forest by the Green Tribunal and yet none have been appointed.
The petition reveals out negligence of the DDA and its officials in discharging their duties to protect and save the forest from destruction and loss. The petition has also sought for removal of garbage dumped at various places in the forest, repair of boundary walls surrounding the area and appointing of an independent auditor under court supervision to audit the accounts of public money spent on maintenance in order to protect the forest area. The court in its observation called it be a “serious issue" and directed for filing of response by the authorities.
