The Supreme Court has granted the plea made by former politician Gali Janardhana Reddy, who had sought permission to travel to Ballari in the state to visit his ailing father-in-law.Reddy, the mining baron,and former minister wasinducted as the Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure of the Bellary district in Karnataka, was accused of Rs 35,000 crore illegal mining case and was sentenced to 6 years jail term along with his brother-in-law B V Srinivas Reddy, managing director of the Obalapuram Mining Company (OMC).
The duo was accused of indulging in illegal mining and forgery in the mining lease boundary markingsin the Bellari Reserve forest stretch, spread over Ballari and Anantapur district.He was granted provisional bail by the apex court in January 2015 after spending more than three years in jail andwas directed not to visit his home town Ballari, Ananthapur and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.
He is out on bail now and is permitted to visit his ailing father in law who is critically ill at an ICU at a private hospital at Bellary.A vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi had also expressed their deep concern over the delay over the trail as nocharges have not been framed against the accused in the last six years despite its order for speedy trial.
