The offices and residences of Jaising who is the president of Lawyers Collective (a voluntary group that raises human rights issues in courts) and her husband Grover, were searched by the CBI regarding a case of violation of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act. A complaint was filed against them for violating the norms in using foreign aid received by them. The complaint was instituted by Home Ministry.
A statement was issued by Bar Association of India condemning the CBI raids and termed them as ‘excessive, disproportionate and unjust’. The bar Association of India said that the raids amount to ‘an assault on the independence of lawyers engaged in constitutionally protected activities of advancing human rights and upholding the rule of Law’.
It was said by the Lawyers collective that the actions alleging violation of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act was taken by Ministry of Home Affairs in 2016 itself and in pursuance of that several documents were checked and seized from them. Therefore a sudden raid after three years was unjust, improper and unreasoned. It was supported by the argument that no other NGO whose FCRA license got cancelled in 2016 faced any sort of criminal action. This FIR was longed after the notice issued by the Supreme Court (CJI-led bench) in a PIL filed by an NGO named ‘Lawyers Voice’ that demanded probe against the Lawyers Collective.
It was stated by Jaising that she is being targeted for enquiring due enquiry process in the sexual harassment allegations against the CJI Ranjan Gogoi.
