Air India, an enterprise owned by the Government which operates on the serving domestic and international airbuses and Boeing aircrafts to various destinations has been the major talk of the day. The airlines is being investigated for irregularities in purchase of airplanes. The issue is based on the accusations made on Air India for their misconduct in acquiring or hiring of 111 aircrafts for Air India which was done by Patel who was the civil aviation minister in the UPA regime.
The CBI had been investigating this issue which was pending for almost one year since the previous order given by the apex court which was dated on January 5th. When this matter was brought to the notice of the Supreme Court, the agency asked for an addition of 2 years to complete the investigation. The Court only gave six months for the agency to complete the investigation. The purpose for the extension of another 2 years for investigation , according to CBI, was that the accused is residing abroad.
A bench of two renowned Judges i.e., Justice A K Goel and Justice U U Lalit made a profound statement that “Investigation must not take years, but it must be completed within stipulated period of time”. The Court had directed the agency to examine on the accusations made by the NGO CPIL which was based on the matters pertaining to Patel who had made Air India to purchase certain biometric systems for a handsome amount of money. There were also various other contentions made by the Comptroller and Auditor General as well as the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. The NGO had also asserted that the Canada’s Superior Court had convicted the specific person involved in the payment of bribe to the then Civil aviation minister. The NGO had also mentioned several other decisions made by the then minister. After all these contentions made by the NGO and several other accusations made by the CAG and PAC, the Supreme Court held that, not more than 6 months will be given to the agency for further investigation and to finish the probe. P S Narasimha, Additional solicitor general who had appeared for the CBI voiced out that the agency had already started the investigation on the basis of the registered FIR
