The pros and cons of the introduction of Aadhaar card is yet to be finalised. The card brought some radical changes in the lives residents of India but yet to be proved as productive as claimed by the government. The 12 digit Unique Identification Number has prevented many illicit activities. The deadline fixed for mandatory linking of Aadhaar previously was 31st December, 2017 but recently the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it is willing to extend the period till 31st March, 2018 for the purpose of various welfare schemes and services. Attorney General KK Venugopal submitted the same before the Supreme Court. In the bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice AM Khanwilkar, govt expressed its willingness to extend the deadline.
On the other hand, there wasn’t any alteration on the deadline set for linking the Aadhaar number with mobile numbers which was till 6th February, 2018 and also with the extension of bank account for those Non-Aadhaar card holders. A claim was made to the bench by a Senior Advocate Shyam Divan who was appearing on behalf of the petitioners that the aforesaid extension should be made available to the Aadhaar Card holders.
Recently, there was a wide contention, that the Aadhaar Card had violated the Privacy rights. A nine-Judge Constitutional Bench held that Right to Privacy was a Fundamental right under the Constitution of India, but left the Aadhar issue unresolved. Some of the petitioners had contended that the linking of Unique Identification Number with Mobile number as well as with bank accounts as illegal and unconstitutional. They had also made accusations about the CBSE’s move, where, it was made compulsory for the students to bring Aadhaar card for examinations but this was denied by the Centre. Further, there was an appeal made before the bench to not take any action against the failure to link Aadhaar Card with mobile number or bank accounts. Finally, it was held by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra that convene of Constitutional bench would be held to hear the matter.
