The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation made a commitment to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in March 2019, this year to implement the waste segregation management in the city by September 30, 2019. Now the deadline has been extended till October 5, Additional Municipal Commissioner S K Jain said that in an latest report submitted to NGT, The Municipal Corporation has pleaded for two week extension. "The segregation of waste has been successfully started in villages, hope to complete the process as early as possible" the commissioner said. The Municipal Corporation has done so far so little to regulate the waste segregation management.
The Jaypee group which runs the waste processing plant near Dadumarja Moved the Tribunal alleging that the Civic body has yet to supply segregate waste to it. Based on this the NGT has asked for a fresh report regarding this issue from an Independent Monitoring Committee. The Municipal Corporation is asked to submit the report until the deadline, if not then they will be asked to pay a heavy penalty in order to improve the ranking of the city Chandigarh in the 2020 Swachh Survekshan. Since the city has slipped to the rank 20th due to inability to adequately enforce the waste segregation management plan earlier this year. Most of the two lakh households in urban areas of Chandigarh give their waste to door-to-door garbage collectors, whos number can be aggregated for around 1,500. However, garbage is collected in carts with no provision to segregate dry and wet waste.
The Municipal Corporation in December last year had directed all the garbage collectors in the city to buy e-carts that will allow them to segregate waste while collecting the garbage from different areas, but at the same time not allowing them to adjustments in the existing carts. The Municipal corporation is also said to sign a pact to regulate this but it has not been signed and enforced yet. In the absence of the waste segregation management system, the plant has also failed to improve upon it's working and one of the walls collapsed due to excessive garbage dumping.
