Johnson and Johnson settled the Ohio lawsuits by claiming that it is ready to pay 20.4 million dollars in order to escape the blame on it for being the reason for the ongoing opioid epidemics in the United States of America. This will keep away the giant healthcare company to face the uncertain trial and resource demands. The company in a statement identified the issue of the opioid crisis to be a complex one which has huge impacts on the public health and said that it seeks to work in collaboration to help the ones in need.
Before this settlement by Johnson and Johnson, other drug companies, namely, Endo, Mallinckrodt and Allergan have settled lawsuits similarly. Likewise, Prude Pharma is reported to settle all of its cases. In this scenario, it would be interesting to note that, in case the settlement of Johnson and Johnson is finalised, Teva would be the only drugmaker left as defendants. The other defendants are distributors. Since most of the drugmakers settled their lawsuits in the initial trial, with a majority of the distributors left in the trial, the emphasis of the case might shift from marketing tactics of the drug makers to the questionable shipping methods of these distributors. However, more settlements, even by the only left drugmaker, Tuva can be anticipated in the upcoming time when the trial is about to take place.
The Opioid Crisis in the United States of America which has taken lives of more than a million people over the years The opioid crisis has its roots in the late 1990s when it was claimed by the pharmaceutical companies that opioids pain relievers and drugs are not addictive and are thus not harmful to the patients. However, several deaths were reported as a result of the misuse of such drugs. This was followed by the confirmation by research that such medications are in fact, highly addictive. The misuse of the injection drugs has led to an increase in HIV, hepatitis C and neonatal abstinence syndrome.
