A person in Singapore is reported to be sentenced to imprisonment for financing terrorism. By this, he became the first citizen of Singapore to be sentenced to imprisonment for committing the above-mentioned crime. He was charged for transferring money to an Islamist preacher. The convicted named as Ahmed Hussein Abdul Kadir Sheik Uduman, is a thirty-five years old was an engineering student specialising in Information Technology. He has been convicted and sentenced to thirty months of judicial custody by a trial court in Singapore for making payments worth upto one thousand one hundred and forty-five dollars to Sheikh Abdullah–al Faisal, who is an Islamic preacher, living in Jamaica. He was arrested by the Department of Internal Security in late 2018 and was kept under police custody under the Internal Security Act. The payment was done in two parts. The first part was transferred in 2016 to a person named as Patrick Gray, who is reported to collect the cash on Sheikh’s behalf. The other part was reported to be collected by Sheikh’s better half in early September in the same year.
The convicted had learnt about Sheikh by watching some Youtube videos, in which he allegedly involves himself in propagating and preaching about the Islamic State (IS). Then they had communication through some social networking sites like Facebook and Wattsapp. Ahmed had not denied the charges against him. However, he had pleaded before the court for imposing a lesser sentence on the ground that his mother was sick and he was the father of a young son. The Judge N G Peng Hong was convinced with this contention and sentenced him to only thirty months of imprisonment, whereas if the leniency was not shown he could have been sentenced up to ten years of imprisonment coupled with a fine of five hundred thousand dollars. He even pleaded that he would like to be a good citizen for his country after his term is over.
