Pakistan’s Former Prime Minister who was sentenced to judicial custody in the Chaudhary Sugar Mills Corruption case was granted bail by the Pakistan Court on medical grounds. Nawaz’s brother, the President of Pakistan Muslim League, Shehbaz Sharif had filed the bail application for the former jailed Prime Minister. It is reported that Nawaz who is now sixty-nine years old is admitted in the Services Hospital, where he is diagnosed with an immune disorder, named thrombocytopenic purpura in which the number of the blood platelets decreases suddenly leading to a life-threatening condition of the patient.
He was transferred from the custody of the National Accountability Bureau to the hospital. The doctor suggested that the disease is a curable one and can be treated in Pakistan itself. Tests are also being conducted to confirm whether he is suffering from dengue or not. Moreover, his doctors added that he suffers from a variety of health-related issues including diabetes. Nawaz’s counsel, Ashtar Ausaf contended that his client’s condition was serious after his platelets had dropped to seven thousand which was confirmed by the head of the six-member board treating him, Ayaz Mahmood.
Prior to this, a remand of fourteen days had been granted by an accountability court in relation to him being involved in the corruption case. Later, the bail petition was heard by a division bench, headed by Justice Baqar Najafi. He was granted bail on the rationale that every life is precious and the convicted three-time Prime Minister’s life is no exception to that. Also, a two-judge Bench has adjourned the hearing of the Al-Azizia corruption case which is charged against him to a later date in October. The immune disorder that he is diagnosed with leads to excessive bleeding or increases the chances of bruising arising from the low platelet count levels since platelets facilitate the clotting of blood.
