The Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra in a significant order modified its November 30, 2016 interim order which had made it mandatory to play national anthem before a movie. SC today modified its order and left it to the discretion of each cinema hall. On October 23 , 2017, almost a year ago, the case in which the Supreme Court had ruled that cinema goers must stand up for national anthem to show their “respect for motherland” saw a major twist with serious differences emerging between the Chief Justice who authored the order and the judge who shared the bench with him , opemly differing with CJI Dipak Misra and opposing his November 30, 2016 order, Justice D Y Chandrachud said “one need not wear patriotism on his sleeve” and people went to movie hall for undiluted entertainment. He also said a person who doesn’t stand up or not sing the anthem should not be seen as anti-national. The order was passed after centre took the stand that till laws are modified, the court can chnage its stance.
