A felicitation ceremony was held today in honour of Retired Hon’ble Justice Nagmohan Das (Senior Advocate) at Self Service Hall in Indian International Centre. It is pertinent to note that the felicitation earmarked and celebrated his appointment as President of the Kolar district unit of Kannada Sahithya Sammelana. Selection of a High Court Judge as a president of a literary meet seems to be a rare gesture.
The felicitation was done by Senior Counsel Basava Prabhu S Patil and others. Other notable presence in the ceremony included Senior Advocate Sharath Javali and Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde.
Mr. Das, born in 1952, is the son of Hebbani Nagappa, a freedom fighter and Parvathamma of Hebbani in Mulbagal taluk. Mr. Das has been involved in the zeal for justice ever since he joined the profession. Since his enrolment as an advocate in 1977, he had practiced in Trial Court as well as the High Court. In 2004, he was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Karnataka High Court.
Since his appointment as a High Court Judge, Mr. Das had been involved in a plethora of important cases. He had been appointed as an adviser by the state government on judgments passed by the HC and the Supreme Court on the NICE project. He headed an expert committee and submitted a report on Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swami Dargah. He also headed the seven-member panel formed by the Karnataka State Minorities Commission to study the demand of the Lingayat community for a separate minority religion status. He was also the chairman of the 22-member expert committee to study the issue and suggest eligibility criteria and guidelines for selection of Rajyotsava Award- a 60 plus year old award in Karnataka.
Not only has Mr. Das been an eminent Judge, he has been doing equally well in the literary domain even with his preoccupations. He has written books in Kannada and English. ‘Samajavada’, ‘Karnatakadalli Nyayanga’ (Judiciary in Karnataka), Untouchability and Law, Ambedkar and Labour Law, ‘Madhyamada Diksoochi’ are some of his prime works. The Kannada Sahitya Parishat has also published a book by him on the life of Karl Marx. ‘Challenges and Problems before Young Advocates’ and ‘Challenges to the Constitution’ are his prominent works in English. He is also one among the 62 personalities selected for the Rajyotsava awards for 2017 by the Karnataka government.
It is his vibrant and diverse personality along with his works, achievements and humanitarian approach that have led him to where he stands now. He seems to be an inspiration for one and all.
