Senior Advocate Indira Jaisingh has started online petition in change.org for live streaming of Supreme Court cases. She had also previously filed a petition before the Supreme Court for live streaming and video recording of cases of national importance. The online petition has been addressed to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The online petition states that the Supreme Court has advanced human rights jurisprudence of this country and has previously heard pleas of citizens on issues of environment, gender, justice and ensured that these rights are protected equally for all. Making points similar to her petition before the Hon'ble Court, the Advocate in her online petition mentions that live telecast of Parliament proceedings has enhanced transparency in its working. The live streaming of cases of national importance would do the same for Supreme Court of India. She has further mentioned that many higher courts around the world do the same. She cites example, regarding people being able to see the proceedings before the International Court of Justice in the case concerning former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani Military Court. In her petition before apex court she has mentioned some more crucial points, she has stated that live telecast of such cases will increase access to courts and will negate the chances of misreporting, errors or second hand information, the petition however acknowledges restrictions involving privacy especially with regard to family and criminal law. She further contends that 'right to seek and receive information' including live streaming of Supreme Court proceedings is a fundamental right guaranteed under article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. She further cites the very cardinal principle followed by the Supreme Court that justice must not only be done rather it must be seen to be done, in support of her contention and thus it becomes essential that persons may be affected by the Supreme Court's decision to be able to access the same video streaming live. She has further mentioned certain judgements which she considers to be of national importance, these include petition relating to constitutionality of Aadhar, entry of women in Sabrimala and change of religious identity of Parsi women. In March Supreme Court had passed an order directing installation of CCTV cameras inside the courts and at important locations within the court complexes in at least two districts in every state and Union Territory. In this given case, bench comprising of Justice A. K Goes, Justice U. U Last had in fact remarked that 'judges do not need privacy in court proceedings'.
