UCC or Uniform Civil Code is a proposal under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution to follow the same laws by every citizen of the country irrespective of their gender, sex, caste, religion, etc. It is a part of the Directive Principles of State Policy which gives some guidelines on how the State should work. If UCC has to be implemented, the personal laws of each religion would have to be scrapped or changed as most of those laws are not equal towards men and women. The patriarchal society in which we live, has always looked down upon women and made laws with that mentality. But now, the time is changing fast. Women no longer want to be confined in the four walls of their kitchens, minorities no longer are oppressed as there are separate laws protecting their rights. Implementing UCC will help to enhance the status of women by giving them equal rights. It can also help reduce the vote bank politics so prevalent in our country. It will simplify all the matters and will reduce the burden on the already overburdened legal system.
But in a diverse country like India, can UCC be a reality? Will the people be ready to accept it? There are still conflicts going on between Hindus and Muslims, people are not willing to listen to anything against their religion as religion governs a significant part of the society. Implementing UCC will be a difficult task but it can be done, more importantly, it should be done. All the big and modern countries all around the world have a uniform code for every citizen. It’s high time that India should bring UCC as well and ensure fairness to all its people. However, it will have to bear the force of religious intolerance of public.
