Online sex abuse on children has been increasing during COVID as the reports were released by Europol, an EU law enforcement agency. The agency also warned of a further rise in such cases if the schools reopen as monitoring of teachers will resume. There has been an increase in the events of cybercrime with everything shut and further increased due to the increasing use of the internet to work online.
Belgian police reported that there has been an increase in access to illegal websites as reported by national law enforcement authorities from 27 EU States. This further led to the shutdown of many such websites to cater to the situation.
Europol Director, Catherine De Bolle in EU Parliament was disheartened and stressed “what is most worrying is the increased online activity by those seeking child sexual abuse material”. She further claimed that it has become so easy for children to have access in the dark web conversation that tends to harm their mind.
Sexual abusers have always been exploiting children but this has enhanced their opportunity during lockdowns. The increased access has made it easy for like-minded to produce, circulate, and down such child sex abuse material.
Not only has this but it also increased in India since COVID. According to the reports released by India Child Protection Fund (ICPF), New Delhi is amongst other cities the major demand seeking city for child pornographic material, therefore, increasing the risk posed on children. ICPF asserted that this is a gross violation of directions of the Supreme Court from time to time and principles of natural justice. Nivedita Ahuja, Spokesperson for ICPF added that “such pornographic sites are playing hide and seek with Indian judiciary and law by simply changing their website URLs frequently. There lies a need on the part of the government of India to breakdown child pornography and take a step ahead by initiating a global dialogue for an international convention against child sex abuse material.”
NCPCR has also issued notice to such online platforms in order to take the concerning issue under its hand. The Commission asked the platforms to submit their policy regarding the prevention of CSAM (child sex abuse material) online on their platforms, the number of complaints received by them and how do they deal with such cases.
