Today, the Supreme Court has ordered status quo on the appointment of an administrator of Sri Mahatobora Veerabhadreshwara Temple at Hiriyadka, Udupi.
Justice N V Ramana along with Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice Surya Kant Has asked the Police of Karnataka to submit a status regarding the actions taken with respect to the dispute including the administration of the temple.
The case was remanded by the High Court to ‘Rajya Dharmika Parishta’ for resolution on the 20th of February.
Sunil Hedge was appointed as the administrative head of the temple by the Parishta.
The matter was then again remanded by the High Court back to the body because of a plea filed by the Alva Hedge family. The matter was remanded back to the body under Section 63A of the Karnataka Hindi Religious Charities and Endowments Act, 1997. The counsels’ of Hedge, Advocate Devadatt Kamat and Advocate Nishanth Patil contended before the Supreme Court that the petitioner and his family have been in charge of the religious affairs of the temple for almost 50 years.
The petitioner pleaded that the temple has risen in popularity due to the constant efforts of the petitioner and his father. Thus, he pleaded to the Court that he may be allowed to continue being an administrator of the temple till the disposal of the current petition.
Due to this, the court issued a notice to M Govardhan Das Hedge and others which was agreed to by their counsel ShaileshMadiyal.
The court said that the State of Karnataka is ordered to file its counter-affidavit showing the gain made in the issue after remand by the High Court to the Rajya Dharmik Parishat. Whilst the Status quo as it exists today will be maintained by both the parties.
